Issue 2007/10, Round 15

Next Saturday

The NAB Northern Bullants take on North Ballarat in another crucial match.   Last week's hard-fought win over Bendigo saw the Ants slip back into eighth position but with a poor percentage and every match is virtually a must-win, so roll up and give the boys every encouragement.

A special Ladies Day is planned, see details below.

And next year ...

At this stage, we can't add much to the rumours circulating relating to affiliations for 2008 other than to say Carlton's decision has yet to be finalised and discussions are still continuing.   We believe the alignment after the teething problems of 2003 has been highly beneficial to both clubs and an extension of the existing agreement is certainly our preferred option.

Rydges On Bell

 Business Breakfast and Cocktail Party

The Business Breakfast at Rydges-On-Bell was probably our most successful to date despite the absence of regular MC Daniel Harford who was filling in on SEN Radio 1116.    Mark Doran provided a most able replacement with some deft delving of guest speakers Syd Jackson and Barry Round, but was somewhat stunned when Mmm-urph immmediately rattled off the answer to a trick question that Mark claimed no-one else had ever answered (we'll keep both question and answer secret).

Photos from the Cocktail Party (the non-incriminating ones) courtesy of the Happy Snapper, James Kerrigan, have been posted on the web site. Check out the talent ...

August 12th :  Past Players and Officials Day

Our match at NAB Oval against Frankston on August 12 will feature a reunion of past players and officials with a view to (a) having a good time, and (b) establishing a working committee ( John Meese, Harold Martin and Garry Grainger are currently on board) to help organise a more formal function later in the year to celebrate the club's 125th anniversary.  A special marque will be erected for the day.

All past players, officials and supporters are most welcome and please pass the word along to anyone who may be interested.   We will have a registration table at the gates and we ask everyone to record their contact details as some of our existing records are seven or eight years out-of-date.

Nando's Member of the Week

Our latest two lucky winners of a Nando's meal voucher are John Nolan of Preston and Ged McMahon of Greensborough.  Congratulations, your vouchers are in the mail.   OPENING AUGUST!    A new Nando store in Preston store will be opening up on the corner of High and Bruce Streets, just a good old-fashioned torpedo punt from the half-forward flank at the Mary Street end.

Knights All-Australian Triumph

In a remarkable result, the recent NAB Under-18 National Championships saw no less than three Northern Knights players win All-Australian honours.  Congratulations to Matt Kreuzer, Jack Grimes and Michael Hurley and to the Knights on supplying three of the four players from the Vic Metro squad to be selected.

The Championships saw the end of Victoria's seven-year dominance (five wins including the last three to the Metropoliitan team and two to Vic Country) with Western Australia setting up their success with a big win over Vic Metro in the opening round played in Perth and scoring solid victories over South Australia and Vic Country in wet conditions in Melbourne over the last fortnight.

The Under-16 Championships are next in line and the Knights have six players in the final squad of 26 players. Congratulations to Stephen Witkowski, Jaryd Cachia, Dylan Grimes, Tom Hill, Dean Smith-Whiting and Tindarra Hood - we will watch Tom Hill's progress with interest as he is the first player from the Preston Junior Bullants to make the Knights list.

And congratulations are also extended to Ben McKinley, a Northern Knights player from 2003-05 who made his AFL debut for West Coast against Port Adelaide last Sunday.

HINTS TO FOOTBALLERS

1.             If an adversary is running with the ball, kick him over unceremoniously if you can't knock it out of his hand.

2.             In making a kick from your hand, let your toe catch the ball the instant it leaves the ground. With a little practice this will be found easy, elegant and effectual.

3.             Practice kicking with both feet.  Many goals are lost through being able to use only one, and the left foot will be found particularly convenient when the ball has lee-way on it.

4.             Never allow boys to play amongst men. They spoil the game, no one likes to rush them and yet they are almost certain to get hurt.

5.             If the ball be near your own goal, kick it as much on one side as possible but not behind if you can help it as it is considered cowardly play.
