The NAB Northern Bullants would
like to invite anyone interested to book in to attend the club's Annual Auction
Friday May 25th (the eve of the TRUenergy VFL's interstate match) at the
Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre. The event is the club's biggest fundraiser and is
always an excellent night. Items include sporting memorabilia, home
entertainment, services, wine and much, much more. A silent auction with a number of new features
will also be operating.
The night begins at 7.00pm and concludes at midnight. The cost is $60 and
includes a 2-course meal, beer, wine and soft drinks, etc. Bookings are
required by the 21st May so please book in at your earliest convenience by
calling (03) 9470 2224.
We are also of course searching
for goods to sell, big, small or anything in-between. If it's worth ten bucks or more and you are willing to
part with it, then give the club a call – smaller items can be included in what
we term our "mix and match" to make up larger parcels which sometimes
bring more as a single lot than the total value of the items individually. Unfortunately we don't have a home game
between now and then, but goods can be dropped off during office hours or to
the Social Club up until 7.00. Alternativelt we can arrange for larger items to be collected from your home or office.

Nando's
Member of the Week
|
Nando's
Restaurants are a proud supporter of the NAB Northern Bullants and as part of
its support are providing a meal voucher to a lucky Bullants member each week.
The lucky winners in the past fortnight have been Cindy Simonoski of Epping and
Ann Wilson of Richmond. For Cindy, the closest restaurants will be at Northland
or Bundoora Square, and Ann's closest outlet is in Toorak Road, South
Yarra. Your vouchers are in
the mail.
After
a horror first quarter with injuries last week, the NAB Bullants will be light
on for AFL experience in the coming weeks with the loss of three key three key
players – Dylan McLaren (cruciate ligament) and David Teague (fractured wrist)
in the first two minutes, and Jake Edwards with a badly bruised heel
(fortunately no structural damage) just a minute before quarter time. With
virtually no interchange and against a powerful and experience Port the
Bullants effort with eight players who would be lucky to have played 25 games
between them was significant and hopefully will be part of a rapid learning
curve as the three injured players recover (listed as 8-10 weeks, six weeks and
four weeks respectively). In
the interim, the playing list is stripped to the bones with the likelihood of
around five top-up players lining up with the Reserves this weekend. Get out the Nugget and give the
old boots a polish just in case you are needed!
To
Nab Bullants 2005-06 player Ross Young on his promotion from the rookie list to
the Carlton senior squad and subsequent fine performance in his first match
last Friday against St. Kilda.
Both the ‘Ants and Blues have got great value from the Carlton rookies
in the five years of our affiliation with no less than seven players who wore
the red and white ultimately appearing in senior AFL matches – along with
Youngie and in no particular order, Adam Bentick, Andrew Carrazzo, Setenta
O’hAilpin, Ryan Jackson (unfortunately injured last week), Jessie Smith, and,
ahem, Lawrence Angwin.
After two somewhat surprise losses
after establishing strong early advantage, the Northern Knights have steered their
season firmly back on track with solid if unspectacular wins in away games
against the Geelong Falcons and Sandringham Dragons. Recent weeks have seen the re-appearance of four top
players in Jack Grimes, Patrick Veszpremi, Luke Cotchin and Luke Stanton after
their once-in-a-lifetime trip to South Africa with an Australian under-18 squad
(we couldn’t play footy, but a pie-night was pretty good). Next weekend sees trial
games for the selection of squads for the upcoming National Championships with
the Knights having 11 players trying out. Our unofficial tip is that the
Knights could provide a many as four of the top 20 picks at next year’s
National Draft
The VRI (Victorian Recreational
Institute) offers you as a NAB Northern Bullant member a range of discounts on
any number of entertainment (especially movies and Telstradome AFL matches),
insurance, car hire, travel and accommodation. There is also a 15% discount available on your
day-to-day Metcards – the VRI had s few problems with the recent policy
decisions by both major political parties to eliminate Zone 3 in the
metropolitan area, but that’s all fixed.
To enquire about discounts on the
Metcards please contact Kylie Seeto at VRI directly on (03) 96107102 to request
your cards.
Our
post-match ceremony after the Werribee match saw two old faithfuls in Frank Cleary
and Alan Murphy, both of whom who have served the Bullants for many, many years
and in a number of less glamorous roles inducted as Life Members. Congratulations to both, the
honour proving that it is not always those serving in "official"
positions that are the most deserving.
Many
believe this was the first time in history that Frank was at a loss for words -
Mmmurph probably wasn't, but as usual we weren't really sure!

Box Hill entered the VFA competition in 1951 (Preston were their first opponents) but the number of matches between the two clubs are relatively low and the win-loss ratio flatters Box Hill considerably as they spent many years languishing in Second Division during the periods Preston were a major force. Last year saw the Bullants highest score against the old Msutangs - if heading to the match by train, get off at Laburnum Station, one past Box Hill.
Our Bullant Box above the beer booth is again available
for hire this season.
