Teague Hangs Up the Boots But Retains the Ant Gig ...
![]() | The NAB
Northern Bullants are delighted to confirm David Teague
will continue
as coach for 2009 but in a non-playing role. |
| Phil : Jeez, Teaguey, ya
reckon I should take on senior coaching again? (David's response remains unrecorded due to him rolling around in hysterical laughter for the next two hours) | Matty Lappin has taken up the
role of Forward Coach at Carlton and retires as a player. Last year's
Reserves coach Vin Dattoli has returned to the Northern Football
League, this time around with West Preston, and interviews for the
Reserves coaching position. We, of course, are not privy to all V.F.L. club coaching appointments, but we can announce that 2007-08 Northern Knights coach Paul Satterly has returned to his spiritual home at Werribee (where he won the 1995 Liston Trophy) to take over the 'Bees V.F.L. team. Frankston have appointed 300-game Kangaroos player Shannon Grant, after (Rumour File) an approach to Phil Cleary was politely refused. In another surprise move, Werribee captain and 2008 Liston Medallist has taken up a role as a conditioning coach with Geelong and will playe with the Cats V.F.L. team in 2009 in a scenario not too dissimilar from Collingwood's appointment of our own Justin Crow at the end of 2007. At the local level, two Northern Football League appointments are of interest - former Carlton players Phil Maylin and Wayne Harmes take over at Bundoora and Lower Plenty respectively. |
![]() | Saddo Signs Up The NAB Northern Bullants have moved quickly to secure the services of 2008 Laurie Hill Trophy winner, Jason Saddington for season 2009 following his retirement from A.F.L. football. With the loss from playing ranks of Teague, Lappin and Josh Vansittart, Saddo's experience of 162 A.F.L. games with the Swans and Carlton, on and off-field leadership (and presence as a bloody nice bloke) with help enormously with what we predict will be another very young list. |
| And on Coaches, a Knights Coup ...
We have to be careful here with comments as to what Denis inherited and/or developed at Carlton after draft restrictions were imposed on the club after salary cap breaches, so we will simply note coaching record elsewhere - nine consecutive Grand Final appearances (and five premierships) during his time with North Melbourne under-19s, a Reserves premiership at Essendon in his only season at Windy Hill, plus of course A.F.L. premierships with the Kangaroos in 1996 and 1998. Next Saturday sees the National Draft (and with the advent of the new Gold Coast A.F.L. club, what commentators are describing as "the last uncompromised" draft for the next two or three season and we wish the Knight's hopefuls all the best for the big day. |

Preston Market Celebrity Cook-Off ![]() In what we hope will become an annual event, the NAB Northern Bullants and Preston Central will host this season's Celebrity Cook-Off will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15 at the Preston Market from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. Dougie Hawkins will again host the event with our Celebrity Chefs including Carlton's Eddie Betts, four-time A.F.L. premiership player, Martin Pike, Bullant coach David Teague and this year's Reserves B&F runner-up, Jake Williams (whose private recipe will feature soon in the Melbourne Times - look out, Gordon Ramsey). Rules are pretty much as for last year - each team will be headed by professional chefs from Rydges-On-Bell and the Catering School of NMIT - and the "amateurs" get twenty bucks and twenty minutes (we'll see how Fast Fast Eddie really is) to buy the ingredients from market stalls and then to cook up a storm under the watchful eyes of the "pro's". A hint to this year's competitors - Dave Boundy's simple-as-simple strawberries and cream got him over the line last year, so don't get too ambitious! The Cook-Off coincides with the City of Darebin's Homemade Wine and Beer Festival to be held at the Preston Town Hall at the conclusion of cooking - if you have managed to survive the Cup Carnival, then try your luck again a couple of weeks later!. Our thanks are extended to all of those involved in the event - Preston Market, Crazy John's, Ultimate BBQs, and, of course, the participants! |
![]() | This year's annual Bullants Sportsmen's Luncheon will be held at Rydges Bell City on Monday December 1st commencing at 12 p.m. with two very special Guest Speakers. We are privileged to have as a guest recently retired St. Kilda champion, Robert Harvey, who is his new role as a development coach with Carlton will be working closely with many of the young Blues that will appear with the Bullants in 2009. Along with Harvey's 21 seasons and 383 games for the Saints, we will also have on stage former Collingwood captain Des Tuddenham, who represented Collingwood and Essendon in 252 games during the 1960's and 70's. This fearless and often controversial footballer will no doubt have some great stories to share with us. To round off some great history over the last 30 odd years, our third speaker will be up and coming Blues start, Marc Murphy : something for all ages! Daniel Harford, 2006 Laurie Hill Trophy winner with
the Northern Bullants and now a much recognised media
performer coming off his debut premiership as coach with Balwyn will be
MC for the event. A third guest speaker is still to be confirmed. Cost is $65 and includes a 2-course meal and beverages. For bookings please call the Bullants office on 9470 2224. The luncheon is kindly sponsored by Northpoint Enterprise Centre and Preston Travel Services. | ![]() |
History Corner TopWith the Cups Carnival coming to an end, for the next issue,we'll revive a couple of old pages documenting our local area links to the Sport of Kings, plus new archives on a couple of horses with a strong local connection through horses bred at the famous Bundoora Park stud of the late nineteenth century, now a tourist attraction."Wallace" - Forget your wimps like Weekend Hussler who can't stay the distance to your average bus-stop, Wallace could lay claim to being one of the top three or four three-year olds in racing history, and again unlike many of today's stars, remained a stallion and went on to establish a stud career that almost equalled his racing career "Darebin" - Appropriately enough named, Darebin was also a great racehorse, and although he wasn't anywhere near the equal of Wallace at stud locally, he did make history by being the first Australian-bred horse to be exported to the United States where his bloodlines continued for many decades as the sire of the mother of one of the States' greatest stallions. |
One Game, One Goal .. and One Premiership!
Literally hundreds have played one game of V.F.L./A.F.L. football (god, we hate the necessary distinction!) . Dozens of others have played over a hundred matches without the sweet taste of a premiership. But unique amongst the thousands that played our great game, there is just one with One Game, One Goal .. and One Premiership!
And research into that notable player's background revealed another fascinating episode in our game's' history ... The Strange Case Of The Missing Umpire!
