    V. F. L. Info

    Q. What are the qualifications for A.F.L. players to participate in the V.F.L. final series?

The full answer is long and complicated, but the basic qualification is seven games with the V.F.L. club (senior or reserves). There are a number of exceptions to this rule covering players with long-term injuries with a reduced requirement for V.F.L. participation.

The V.F.L. issues clubs with progressive lists from around round 16 as to which players are eligible or what the requirements are for the player to achieve qualification. Generally most clubs will have anywhere between 16 and 20 players eligible.

There are separate eligibility rules for Reserves matches, but if a V.F.L.’s senior club is involved on the same weekend, there are no restrictions provided the A.F.L. player has met the basic requirement for senior matches (thus the likes of Chris Bryan, Ryan Jackson and Jesse Smith played for the Ants Reserves in last years qualifying final).

There is no restriction (other than the 12-10 rule covered separately) in the first week of the V.F.L. finals, a weekend that corresponds with the last round of the A.F.L. competition.

    Q. What is the 12-10 rule and how does it affect the Bullants?

There are actually two 12-10 rules – one for the home-and-away season and a different rule for the V.F.L. final series.

During the home-and-away rounds, an A.F.L. affiliated club playing a “stand alone” club (currently only Port Melbourne and Frankston) can field a maximum of 12 A.F.L. listed players including rookies. Any A.F.L. players not selected can play in the V.F.L. club Reserves team, but under a vague “gentlemen’s agreement”, most clubs do not field A.F.L. players unless they are regularly playing in the Reserves or are returning from injury.

In the V.F.L. finals, all clubs are restricted to 12 A.F.L. players regardless of whether their opponents are aligned or not. This rule applies to all finals regardless of whether the A.F.L. is playing, and for 2007 is also applicable to Geelong, the only Victorian A.F.L. club retaining an independent Reserves team.

    Q. Why does your newsletter carry reports on the Northern Knights and who are they?

All V.F.L. clubs with the exception of Collingwood are aligned to a club in the elite Victorian TAC Cup under-18 competition that provides approximately 50% of the National Draft.

With the demise of the League Thirds competition, the Northern Knights were formed from the unlikely combination of Collingwood and Carlton Thirds, hence a rather bland white jumper with an equal number of thin black and navy blue stripes – most of the early coaching staff came for the ‘Pies but the clubs song was based on the old “Lily of Lagoona’, the same underlying tune of “The Old Dark Navy Blues”.

The Knights have been linked to the Bullants since their inception. Players graduating from the Knights who are not drafted to A.F.L. clubs are tied to us – if they move to other V.F.L.clubs, a 00 transfer fee applies (and of course if we pick up players from T.A.C. clubs other than the Knights).

Regardless of any arrangement, these wonderful young men from our district and a part of the Bullants involvement with the local community deserve every promotional opportunity we can make for them.

Come along to one of their games at NAB Oval – we guarantee you will be amazed at the levels of skill and enthusiasm displayed!

Yes - the rule still applies (has in fact been expanded to restrict Geelong to 12 AFL listed players in finals).
